How to spot a fake Chanel bag

The details counterfeiters get wrong, and why professional authentication is the only real certainty.

Every Chanel in the Kaya closet is authenticated.

The details counterfeiters get wrong

A convincing fake can fool a quick glance, but Chanel builds its bags to a standard that is expensive to copy. Most counterfeits fall down on the same handful of details. Here is what to look at.

None of these checks is proof on its own. Taken together they tell you whether a bag deserves a closer, professional look.

Stitching

Chanel stitching is even, tight, and consistent, with a precise number of stitches across each quilted diamond. Wandering stitch counts, loose threads, or puckered seams are a common tell on a fake.

Leather and quilting

Genuine lambskin is soft and smells of real leather, and caviar leather has a firm, even pebbling. The quilted diamonds should line up across seams and continue cleanly onto the back of the bag. Misaligned quilting is a frequent giveaway.

Hardware and the chain

The chain should feel heavy, and the leather woven through it should be one continuous piece, not short sections tucked in at each link. Clasps engage with a solid, weighty click, and the engraving on the hardware is crisp and level, never shallow or crooked.

Serial number and authenticity card

Older Chanel bags carry a serial sticker inside with a matching authenticity card, and the digits should agree with the bag's age. Newer bags use an embedded microchip. A mismatched card, a font that looks off, or a serial that does not fit the era all warrant suspicion.

When in doubt, authenticate

Even a trained eye can be fooled by a good fake. A checklist narrows the odds, and professional authentication is what confirms a bag is genuine. This is exactly why every Chanel in the Kaya closet is authenticated before it reaches a member.
