Frequently Asked Questions
About Kaya
Can I rent designer handbags in South Africa?
Yes. Kaya is South Africa's first designer handbag club. Members rent authenticated designer handbags from brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Bottega from a shared, rotating collection. Try it from R1,999 per rental, 5 to 10 days, or R2,499/month with delivery to your door.
Is there a Vivrelle or Cocoon alternative in South Africa?
Yes. Kaya is South Africa's answer to international designer handbag clubs like Vivrelle and Cocoon. Delivery to all major cities across South Africa. Local ZAR pricing, no customs or import fees.
Is there a waiting list?
Kaya has limited member spots. If the current intake is full, you can join the waitlist and we'll notify you as soon as a spot opens.
The Bags
What condition are the bags in?
Condition varies by bag. Some bags are brand new, others are pre-loved and may show signs of wear. All photos in the collection are of the actual bag and include close-ups of any imperfections. If you'd like to know more about a specific bag, just ask us.
Are the handbags authentic?
Authenticity is guaranteed, and it is the part of Kaya we take most seriously. Wherever possible, we source each bag from its original owner, so it comes with the original receipts, certificates, and packaging. We also work with vetted resellers who supply authentication documentation. When that paperwork is no longer available, we authenticate the bag through Entrupy, the market leader in third-party authentication, and can issue an Entrupy certificate for any bag in the collection. Read more about how we authenticate every bag.
What designer brands are available?
Kaya's collection includes bags from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Bottega Veneta, YSL (Saint Laurent), Gucci, Fendi, Prada, Celine and other luxury houses. We are always adding new bags to the collection across a range of brands, styles and conditions.
What if I damage or lose a bag?
Your refundable deposit is usually all it takes, and you would only pay a bag's full replacement value in the rare cases below.
- Normal wear and tear is on us: minor rubbing, light hairline scratches to hardware, gentle loss of structure, natural discolouration over time, and repairs to removable parts like zips, hooks or feet.
- Damage beyond that is charged to you: tears, rips, scuffs, punctures, deep scratches, torn lining, odours, and anything caused by make-up, liquids, ink, sharp objects, grime, grease, perfume, food, or strong heat. Your refundable deposit goes towards it. It is usually enough on its own, and if a repair costs more than your deposit, we charge the difference.
- Delivery and collection are by insured courier, so anything that happens in transit is on us.
- If a bag is stolen, report it to the police, tell us within 12 hours, and send us the case number within 24 hours. You are liable for its replacement value, and your deposit goes towards that. We recommend adding the bag to your household all-risks cover for the days you have it.
- If a bag is lost, kept more than 7 days past due, or damaged beyond repair through negligence, you are liable for its full replacement value.
- How we collect it: your deposit goes first, then we ask you to settle any balance, and if a balance remains we may charge the card you paid with, up to what you owe for that bag. If a bag is reported stolen or is not returned, we may charge the card sooner.
If something happens, let us know and we'll arrange collection. Full details on damage, theft, and loss are in the membership agreement.
What counts as negligence?
Negligence is not the same as an accident. Everyday wear, and the odd bump or spill, is exactly what your membership and deposit are for. Negligence means careless handling a reasonable person would avoid with a valuable bag, for example:
- Leaving it unattended in a public place.
- Leaving it in view in a parked car.
- Letting someone outside your home use it.
- Taking it somewhere you would expect to ruin it, like the beach, a pool, or heavy rain.
- Exposing it to paint, dye, or harsh chemicals.
Theft is handled under its own rule, not this one. A stolen bag is one you are liable to replace at its replacement value, whatever the circumstances, with your deposit applied first, so report any theft to the police and tell us promptly. Negligence changes cleaning and repair costs, not that. Carry a bag to work, to dinner, to an event, the way you would your own. That is never negligence.
How often can I swap bags?
Essence and Signature members rent one bag at a time, and swap for your next bag when you like. Each rental can be kept for up to 2 months. When you're ready for a new bag, request a swap and we'll collect your current bag and deliver the next. The shortest rental is 5 days, and the courier takes up to 2 days each way. You can rent an extra bag at 30% off the Prelude rate.
Can I keep a bag longer than a month?
Essence and Signature members can keep a bag for up to 2 months per rental. Prelude rentals run 5 to 10 days. If you love it, just don't swap and your bag stays with you.
How do I choose my next bag?
Browse the bags in your member dashboard. Reserve the bag you want, and we'll deliver it once your current bag has been returned and our team has inspected and cleaned it. This usually takes about 2 business days from when your previous bag gets to us.
Membership
How does Kaya Club work?
Choose a membership tier, book the bag you want from the shared collection. We deliver it to your door. Let us know when you'd like a new one and we'll swap it for you.
What is the membership term?
Memberships have no minimum term and no cancellation fee. Essence and Signature run month-to-month (annual memberships run to the end of your paid year). On monthly billing, cancellation takes effect at the end of your next billing month, and you keep access until then. Freezing is separate and takes effect immediately. Prelude is pay per rental, so no commitment.
What's the difference between Essence and Signature?
Prelude lets you rent one bag at a time from R1,999 per rental, 5 to 10 days, with no monthly fee, and reaches bags up to R100,000 retail value including bags reserved for Signature. Essence lets you rent one bag at a time from designer bags up to R50,000 retail value, excluding bags reserved for Signature, and swap for your next bag when you like. Signature includes everything in Essence plus limited editions, exotics and bags above R50,000 retail value, and the rare pieces reserved for Signature at any value. Essence and Signature members can also rent an extra bag at 30% off the Prelude rate.
Can I cancel my membership?
Yes, with no minimum term and no cancellation fee. On monthly billing, cancellation takes effect at the end of your next billing month, and you keep access until then (annual memberships run to the end of your paid year). Freezing is separate and takes effect immediately, pausing your membership rather than ending it.
Is there a minimum term?
No. Essence and Signature are month-to-month with no minimum term and no cancellation fee (annual memberships run to the end of your paid year). On monthly billing, cancellation takes effect at the end of your next billing month, and you keep access until then. Freezing is separate and takes effect immediately.
Do I own the bag?
No. Kaya, or the bag's owner, keeps ownership the whole time. You have the bag on loan for your period and then it comes back to us. Membership never gives you an ownership stake in a bag.
Is Kaya like renting a bag?
In everyday terms, yes. You pay to use a bag for a set period, then return it or swap it for another. The Membership Terms set out the exact legal basis and what you're responsible for while a bag is with you.
What am I responsible for while I have a bag?
You take reasonable care of the bag, the way you would look after your own. Normal wear is included. Loss or major damage may draw on your refundable deposit, as set out in the Membership Terms.
What happens at the end of a rental?
You return the bag, with delivery and collection included, or swap it for another. You never have to buy or store a bag once you are finished with it.
Cost & Billing

How does Prelude per-rental pricing work?
Prelude pricing is based on the bag's retail value and how long you keep it. The base rate covers 5 days, starting from R1,999 for bags up to about R20,000 retail and scaling with value above that, for example R3,299 for a R50,000 bag and R6,699 at the R100,000 ceiling. Keeping a bag beyond 5 days adds a half-day rate for each extra day.
| Bag retail value | 5 days | 7 days | 10 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| R15,000 | R1,999 | R2,399 | R2,999 |

Essence and Signature additional rentals are charged at 30% off the above Prelude prices.
How does the deposit work?
Prelude: Every rental is secured by a refundable security deposit, usually around 10% of the bag's retail value. It covers professional cleaning, repair, late-return fees, and, in the rare cases set out in the membership agreement, replacement value. Normal wear and tear is on us, so for most rentals it comes back untouched. It is taken with each rental, refunded by EFT within 14 business days after your bag is returned and passes inspection, and topped up again on your next rental.
Essence & Signature: Your deposit is held for your membership term and refunded by EFT within 14 business days of it ending. To keep renting, you keep a minimum balance: R2,500 for Essence and R5,000 for Signature. On Signature, a bag worth more than R100,000 needs 5% of its retail value instead, and the extra comes back after that rental. It is the first thing we use for anything you owe on a rental, and if we draw on it you top it back to the minimum before your next rental.
Why is there a deposit?
A single bag can be worth tens of thousands of rand, and the wardrobe is shared. The deposit is what lets us hand real designer bags to members with confidence, and it keeps the collection in beautiful condition for everyone. It is refundable, used only for what you owe on a rental, and the balance comes back to you by EFT.
Why do you run a credit check?
Because you are renting items worth tens of thousands of rand. In the rare case a bag is lost or not returned, we may need to recover its value, so we run a quick identity and credit check before your first rental, the same way a car or any high-value rental would. It keeps the club trustworthy for every member, and your documents are stored securely and used only to process your application.
Why is Kaya members-only?
Two reasons. It keeps the club to people who will look after a shared wardrobe, so the bags stay in great condition for everyone. It also keeps Kaya personal: we get to know our members and help them choose. Joining takes an application and a quick review, and we reply on WhatsApp within one business day.
Delivery & Logistics
How do I return a bag?
On the last day of your rental, a courier comes to your pickup address to collect the bag. Before they arrive:
- Pack the bag with everything it arrived with, including its dust bags, pochettes, locks, and any other hardware, and settle it all back into the box.
- Seal the box with the tape we include.
- Slip the box inside the courier bag we provide, and hand it over. We take care of the rest.
What if I miss a collection?
When you are ready to swap or return a bag, we book a two-hour collection window with you, for example 10am to 12pm. If our courier arrives in that window and there is no one to hand the bag over, a failed-collection fee of R750 applies to cover the trip and the wasted slot, and we will rebook. If you cannot be there, leave the bag with someone who can hand it over.
What if a bag isn't returned on time?
Every bag has a return date, and you can extend it if your membership allows. If a bag is not returned or ready for collection by then, a late fee applies for each day it is overdue, at R750 a day or the bag's daily rental rate if that is higher, and your rental charges keep running until it is back with us. We will remind you.
If it is still not returned more than 7 days after it is due, we treat the bag as lost: the late fees stop there, you are liable for its full replacement value plus what had already built up, and any outstanding amount may be handed to debt collectors.
Where do you deliver?
Kaya delivers across South Africa including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and other major cities. All deliveries are handled by insured courier.
